Food

Hin Ching suggested we have lunch at Karamunsing Capitol today. There are some new restaurants there so we decided to check it out.

We decided to go Fatty Chef Cuisine restaurant.

First thing that comes into my mind when I stepped into the restaurant…

“Wah, sei loh. Why so high class wan!? This place is going to be damn expensive… Okay la, die then die la, I want to enjoy this meal!”

The ambiance is also amazing—I immediately feel like a millionaire when I stepped in.

“Only yau chin lou visit these restaurant” I said to myself. Hahaha :D

If I have the chance, I want to look at the chefs… are they really all fat fat one?

We talked about the menu design, it was good. But we found something funny, if you go visit next time, look at the first page and last page of the menu, got gwai lou one! The images were taken from internet hahaha. Two nerds sit together, sure got funny conversation :D

“I want to order Hainan Chicken rice, don’t feel like eating oily food today… wait, RM15 for Hainan Chicken rice ah…. okay la” (hand trembles, cold sweat from head)

(Truth: spend too much on clubbing last month, this month have to cut back expenses)

Kelvin joined us… he looked at menu… look back at me…

We both smiled :P

What to do… we have not reach that level of income yet. However, we can easily pay hundreds for alcohol, but not proper good food. Silly KK people. hahaha.

Hainan Chicken Rice – This is what I ordered. Amazingly, the food awesome, totally out of my expectation. The chicken is juicy and chewy, and the rice is fragrant. Presentation is good. I reckon we can only get these kind of taste with great ingredient – in this case, chicken.

We get what we pay la I guess. I thoroughly enjoyed the dish ^^ I haven’t had such a good chicken rice for quite long time..

Ayam Percik with rice – Kelvin ordered this. According to his review, he says it’s pretty good. I asked him to elaborate more, he says:

“The sauce is satay sauce loh… okok lo… nice ar… and everything is up to standard. But leh, the rice is small portion la. other than that, everything is good.”

Another satisfied customer, I assume :)

Lemon Chicken rice – Hin Ching ordered this. He is satisfied with the dish as well, the only thing he complaint was the rice was a bit hard.

Normally, in other restaurant, they fried the chicken in whole piece, then only cut into little pieces and add lemon sauce. However, in this restaurant, they fried the chicken separately, so each pieces are 100% crunchy on the outside.

3 of us are very happy. Total bills comes up with RM52.

They have wide selection of desserts too, looks tempting! I will visit this restaurant again -specially for the desserts. Siapa nak ikut?!

Update: A friend of mine, Stella joined me for second trip to Fatty Chef Restaurant to specially try their desserts.

Monkey Pool and Monkey something something. I don’t remember hahahha.

I was invited to Hyatt Ramadan Buffet, to do food review.

Well, you see… I am not really a food blogger—I just like to to take photos of good food and share with you.

I do not share lousy food on blog, waste my time only :P lousy food do not deserve to get free publication. Which also means, the food I blog here is good.

I am fortunate to get invitation from Dinoza to attend Hyatt’s Ramadan buffet. “Ah Bing! Come we go makan with other KK food bloggers!” he told me on phone.

“Buffet? OKAY confirm come!”

…. then stupid Bing had big meals 3 hours before buffet *totally forgot about the buffet*, I end up tasting instead of feasting T_T

So here are some photos to share with you.

Buffet area

Chocolate fountain

Dessert

Bread

Kuih Apom

Fried food

Skillful chefs preparing food in front of you.

Chicken Tikka

Malay cuisines

Fresh fruits

Steamed dessert

Western food

Pickles

Salads

As you can see from the photos above, the food is not limited to Malay cuisine only—they serve different cuisines to cater in-house guest and western customers who some prefers western food. Even dim sum are served.

The price—slightly on the pricey side, but that’s hotel price mah, confirm got standard one. However, I keep comparing to SHOGUN buffet at Semenanjung Malaysia.. hahaha.

The dining area were jammed pack with hungry customers by 6:30pm. Make sure you come earlier, or make reservations, because seats are limited.

Food quality, I really don’t have to say much lah, Hyatt is a world class hotel, of course they are able to hire excellent chefs. Got standard one, ok? ;)

From left to right—John from Ravejoint.comDinoza from creator of Sabahan Bloggers community. Ms.Tina Goh (Hyatt Marketing Communication Manager). Angeline Ong from Everyday Food I Love and Handsome Bing (haha).

Thank you so much for invitation and the hospitality, I enjoyed my time :)

“Lin si, you want to go try out authentic Indon food ma?” Joey asked.

Joey is a new friend I recently met. We are lucky to meet each other through blogging, and she just recently moved to KK. Here’s Joey’s blog.

“Why you call me lin si oooooooooooo” I asked.

“Isn’t that how KK people call each other?”

/faint hahahhaaha.

BTW, Joey refers me as “…a famous blogger from Kota Kinabalu” in her blog. I am famous!! Wohoooooo! *syok chin-chin*

This how the restaurant looks like. Very nice right? I love the ambience. It was very quiet when we arrived. We even laughed at ourselves for making reservations. But it was packed around 7.30-ish. Malay family dine late, I guess.

If you prefer to sit on chair, you have to sit outside, without air-con room. Shoo shoo.

One thing I like about this restaurant is, they provide long tables to accomodate family of large members. They serve mostly Malay customers and Malays tend to have larger family members. For me, this is perfect for large gatherings – especially class gathering, but without alcohol.

The Husband, Kenneth (yes Joey’s married) offered to pick me up because I don’t know the exact location. It’s not a restaurant per se, more like a kediaman rumah modified into a business operating platform.

This is the exact location of D’KL restaurant.

Drinks we ordered—Air Serai and Soda Gembira. Air Serai is lemongrass juice, very rare in KK. You must try!

Joey ordered Soda Gembira, which is air bandung (rose extract) mixed with evaporated milk and soda, if not mistaken lah. I am very senkalin one, I guess everything :P

And these are the foods we ordered.

Kangkung Belacan

Ayam Bakar Taliwang – A bit charred, but I guess that’s how padang food suppose to taste like :P

Ikan something something with young mango. lol.

Ayam Penyet – I have to mention the effort they put in their food. Look at the presentation of the dish! Each cabbage are rolled individually, amazing details!

Cumi Goreng – Guess what is cumi?

Tauhu Telur – I seen this dish at food show before, never thought KK has this dish! I love deep fried tauhu, kesyokan chin chin.

Nasi Putih Kemgembiraan Maksimum – damn cool dish name, and yes I added this myself. It’s not available in the menu haha.

Guess how much all of these cost?

RM75

That’s considered cheap in KK standard. Seriously. With the great ambience, great food, helpful and friendly staff, we couldn’t get anything cheaper than that.

On top of that, I am lucky to have companionship with Kenneth and Joey, which makes it even more perfect. What a great night :)

D’KL have successfully convert another satisfied customer into their list. I’ll be coming back again.

Reader's comment at KK Best Food

Haii mm haii a… so geng?!

I met this new friend, YYY, let’s call him Yoong, I am aware of this guy’s existence he left his comments here.

Yoong works at Winner Hotel and he strongly recommends this restaurant to us. He invited me to go over for food review. I soon found out that the restaurant is own by his dad, ex-Sabah Chief Minister, Datuk Yong Teck Lee.

“I want discount!!!!” I said to him (shamelessly hehehe).

“Ok bah.. most importantly you come and try the food first” Yoong replied.

After a few exchanges of phone calls, I decided to bring a group of judges to join my adventure. If I go alone, I can only review 1-2 dishes, not good.

Winner Hotel is situated in the center of town. It has been operating before you and I were born.. parents can use the phrase “想當年” if they describe this place.

If one restaurant has been operating for more than 30 years, you know the standard are above par.

Congratulation!

Hahahahaha omg this is funny. I can’t stop myself from editing this photo..

YSLo made Amanda looks so tiny.

I am not taking any photo with Amanda because she makes me look huge :p

These are friends who joined me for food review. The furthest right is Yoong, the manager of the restaurant.

年紀輕輕,Yoong is managing the restaurant and hotel already.. and he is damn confident.

I have to say Yoong is a funny guy. Why? Amanda keeps looking at him, because his mole makes her smile laugh uncontrollably.

And of course, Hin Ching! He is an artist ;)

Here are the food we ordered.

Fried chicken 童子炸雞 – Yoong says this chicken will be tastier with 油淋 method instead of 油炸 method. The latter method causes the meat to become dry.

Unfortunately this is the only dish we didn’t finish.. the chicken ran away before we can finish it :(

Ostrich meat with tomato 鴕鳥炒蕃茄 – Ostrich meat is tender, and tomato is one of my favourite fruit (yes, tomato is a fruit). I enjoy eating this dish very much. Never thought both of these ingredients mix up so well together.

Dry Fried Fish 干煎魚片 – This is the dish with a name that sounds like keropok. The dish that Yoong mentioned in my comment.

According to Yoong, he has no idea what fish is it, so… neither do I. Hahaha! Makan saja lah.. as long as it taste good, I don’t care what fish I am eating, or whatever meat it is.

This dish deserves Yoong to call this dish his personal favourite. It’s nice.

Green vegetable with garlic – I don’t know what’s the name for this vege. So paiseh! Hahha. Luckily there’s a plate of vegetable, or else I will die as a new vegan (I turned vegetarian yesterday, really!).

Compare to other dishes, this vege plate is so-so only. Nothing stands out. What I am implying is—all KK food are good. That makes a delicious dish to become so-so only! (…noh!).

My bullshitting skillz has raised to another level.

Nestum Fried Prawn 麥片蝦 – Amanda has been mentioning this dish since 1 month ago.

“I grew up eating this dish, this is my favourite! I had this even before I grew my first tooth” she said.

“Yes!! it is THAT good!” Hahaha.

Nestum prawn goes well with mayonnaise.

However, I reckon it tastes better with butter..

Ohhhh the ULTIMATE BUTTER PRAWN.

Bing 1:0 Amanda :P

All of these dishes are personal recommendation by Yoong.

His selections are good, however, he will need to face a touch challenge…

I bring you…

Ahbing.com Official Judge Panel (The A-Team)

Contestant Yoong will face a tough challenge ahead.

I told you he was a confident guy. He can still smile despite the unfavourable looks on the judges.

Another contestant, failed miserably. The contestant is right behind Yoong…

I want use this opportunity to thank Yoong for his great hospitality and food. Thank you again for spending awesome lunch with us.

The same goes to YSLo, Amanda and Hin Ching for spending wonderful lunch time together. Let’s do this again :)

P/S: Ultimate KK Food Update (2011): 43 Food You Must Not Miss in KK

After one whole month, hundred ringgit spent, and 3kg heavier.. I finally completed this post.

Prepare your tissue box, and stick your head closer to the screen, cause this is the Ultimate Guide to Kota Kinabalu Food™

(…tissue box is for saliva)

1. Bak Kut Teh 肉骨茶

There are many Bak Kut Teh restaurants around Kota Kinabalu (KK), and I believe this is KK most famous Bak Kut Teh restaurant. Why? This year alone, I met 2 different food shows filming there, Taiwan and South Korea respectively. This restaurant could be one of Malaysia’s icon at other countries.

Food hosts all over the country have visited this restaurant. This restaurant is equivalent to the Char Kuey Tiao auntie at Penang (but the Bak Kut Teh boss is friendly).

2. Chicken Wing  雞翅膀

Chicken wing has become one of the icon food at KK these few years. It all started by a little chicken wing stall at Beverly Hills. The owner has secret recipe that makes whole KK people crazy for his wings.

I remember buying this wings for RM1 each during my high school period. Few years later the wings quickly became RM1.80 when the reputation and fame caught up.

3. Ikan Panggang 燒魚

This is stingray, the same species that killed Steve Irwin, the crocodile hunter. This fish is not a human killer in nature, but once they were killed and put on a hot grill — they taste awesome! Especially with sambal and fresh lime juice, cooked on banana leaf. Yummy to the max.

4. Damai Roti Kahwin 麵包

What’s so special about roti kahwin? This roti, don’t play play. Got story wan.. let me tell you.

This bread has revolutionized the fate of shoplots at Damai. The kopitiam, call Foo Yuen (富源), makes the most awesome bread in the world that it *melts* in your mouth the moment you put it in. I am having difficulty on how to put this into proper words, you have to try it yourself.

This restaurant has practically changed the face of the street, many new food businesses appeared to cope with the hungry crowds, shops around closed down and converted into restaurants, attracted many stalls too. Now the street is call “Wai-sek gai”. You say “Damai roti kahwin” to any KK folks, we will say “ahhhhhh yes yes yes, you’re very smart ha! let’s go yam cha”. This kopitiam is never empty.

Fu Yuan also takes their Teh C Ping into a whole new level. 1/2 of the drink is evaporated milk… trust me, you’ll be in heaven.

5. Guo Min noodle 國民干撈面

Guo Min restaurant is famous for the chewy noodles and home-made fish cake (blue bowl), I prefer to order fresh fish slices or chicken slices. Beef tendon noodle is one of their specialty too.

This restaurant at Sunnygarden was visited by Ah Xian (Astro food host) recently. You can see his face on every wall, lol.

6. Hilltop Fish Noodle 魚雜米粉

This restaurant was recommended by my relatives. It’s their favourite because the soup is more tomato based and the ingredients are most diversify. You can order fish bladder, stomach or any intestine for your interest. I don’t think they serve fish scales though. There are many fish noodles restaurants at KK, it’s difficult to list them all in this list so I decided to pick this one.

You can also try Hung Kei Restaurant at Damai, which is my personal favourite. And another one called Wang Wang restaurant, listed below.

7. Coconut Pudding 椰香布丁

This is not exactly the MUST-HAVE food in KK. Since the list is mostly noodles, I think I add a dessert into the list.

Coconut pudding is one of my favourite dessert since young. If you never try coconut pudding before, I urge you to try out the coconut pudding at a seafood restaurant called Xia Zhong Xia (蝦中蝦) at Hilltop.

Make sure you only go after 6pm, and they only serve limited servings per day. So far, this is the best coconut pudding I’ve tasted at KK.

8. Ngiu Chap (Beef Noodle) 牛雜面

Can you resist beef noodle with tasty thick broth? There are plenty of famous beef noodle around KK, and one of them is at Lintas 33 bread shop. You ask any KK fella “hey which ngiu chap best in KK?”, you might get 20 different replies.

How did I pick this restaurant? I close my eyes and simply pick. This restaurant damn lucky. Despite simply pick, the beef noodle standard is definitely above par! :)

9. Inanam Custard Bread 下南南麵包

My dad used to buy this custard bread for me when I was young, I say, around 10 years old maybe? He bought a dozen of these custard cake, not a normal number for afternoon tea. But rest assured, the rest of the week I will treat my dad like a King! (he knows me weaknesses).

And guess what? I can finish the buns in few hours. Then my mum will scold me cause I am always too full for dinner..  and I finished it all by myself (without sharing with sister).

When I grew up. My dad’s friends and relatives will say “wahhh.. your son very tall and huge oh!”

“Of course la, you have no idea how many buns I fed him.” My dad replied.

10. Roast Duck 燒鴨

My dad says this restaurant serves the best roast duck noodle in KK. He announce the “greatest roast duck noodle” to everyone he knows. My dad often solves his brunch here, for many years. If I don’t trust him, who should I trust?

Personally, the roast duck noodle never fails to impress my taste buds. I grew up eating there, probably ate hundreds of ducks which accumulated all these years.

The yellow thingie (attached photo) is 春卷 (Chun-Gain in Hakka). I only came to realize (while collecting resources for this post) that Chun-Gain is Sabah specialty, you can only find this food at Sabah! No wonder I never see anyone selling this at West Malaysia.

What is a Chun Gain? Chun-Gain is the Chinese version of pork sausage — without the preservatives enough to mummified you. Once you start eating, you can’t stop.. very addictive.

11. Sheng Rou Mian 生肉面

“What? Raw Meat Noodle?!” (direct translation in Chinese). Eww.

You may be disgusted by the name of this dish. However, for KK people, this dish name is the most heavenly dishes we’ve ever hear. This dish is created for the love of pork… no, this noodle is not served with raw pork meat. I believe the original name derives from boiling the pork in hot broth before serving — thus the soft and tender thin pork slices.

What makes the soup damn special? The minced pork lards. The dry noodle is perfect combination too. Why? You tarik the noodle once, and you quickly send down the dry noodle with soup. Wah.. kesyokan x 10000.

Sometimes I wonder, do they mix the noodle with pork oil too..? I rather don’t want to know the answer. I rather die young than quit eating this dish.

Best place to eat this dish: Lintas (a few similar shops around)

12. Wan Wan Fish Noodle 旺旺餐廳

This is another KK most famous restaurant — Wang Wang restaurant. This is one of my favourite restaurant I mentioned earlier above the post. Wang Wang restaurant serves the most expensive fish noodle at KK (based on my experience). However, they have a valid reason for charging premium price — they serve quality and high standard fish, and damn delicious one. You’ll happy to pay the premium price after your meal — trust me.

The noodle itself is a dish of its own. As you can see from the photo above, the noodle contains fried shallots, green onions and mince chicken. Qualify as a complete dish. The soup base — you have two main soup base to choose from, tom yam or normal one. Both taste absolutely awesome. I didn’t say that because I am promoting KK food, it’s true – you have to taste it to believe.

This restaurant is also one of the favourite spot for food shows. Even one scene from TVB seriese Born Rich was filmed here. You can see 3 Hong Kong actors tarik noodle into mouth while filming ^^;

13. Tuaran Noodle 斗亞蘭面

Tuaran noodle is a local delicacy. I can guarantee you that this noodle cannot be found anywhere on Earth but here. I can be honest with you, this is a simple dish. Yet, this noodle has that special taste that keeps you looking for more.

Long ago, this dish only can be found at further district call Tuaran (hence, the name of the noodle). However it’s too troublesome to drive 20km from central business district to eat this noodle. Eventually a few restaurant offer this dish around KK area.

This dish might replace Char Kuey Tiao in 10 years time. You’ll never know.

14. Tanjung Aru Zu Chap 豬雜面

It takes me 3 weeks to finally have the chance to eat this dish.

This old kopitiam only serves during the morning, and the noodles are usually sold out before noon. Why is this restaurant so damn famous, for many generations? (The restaurant is very very old)

One word: DELICIOUS

For your information, they serve only one dish, and that’s pork intestines with noodles. They have perfected the recipe, and the recipe has been passed down for two generations (or three?)

The routine is a bit different when you go to this restaurant.

“How many people?”

“3″

Which part do you want?”

“……[insert pork intestine name]”

“OK”

======

Tips: or you can say “cham-cham”, which means MIX everything and all hell breaks lose ;)

Oh, did you know why it takes me 3 weeks to finally eat this dish?

Answer: They already sold out by the time I wake up at 10am ^^;

15. Pan Fried Dumplings 鍋貼

OH. MY. GOD.

“This is only a pan-fried dumpling” anonymous says.

“NO, this is GUO TIE, the ultimate bestest-best-best-best food you can find at KK” I reply arrogantly.

“Have you ever try eating a dumpling that meat juice burst out every time you bite?” I added. “You will repeat the first sentence…”

.

.

This is the end of the list… hungry yet?

P/S – I’ve prepared the location for you

Pinpointing the exact locations of the food listed in this post. Steal it, and share ;)

Applauds for the food stalls/restaurants for making a difference in KK food scene. Quietly, they have put in much effort and maintain quality standard to ensure KK foods gets mention locally and internationally. And of course, I encourage everyone to try the good food listed here.
