I am trying something new here, which I will explain further down the post.

#1) Your first post

First proper post in 2008 – Better don’t read. Will waste your 2 minutes of your life.

#2) A post you enjoyed writing the most

I’d probably pick this blog entry - I have a new hookah, baby

Until today, I still get emails and comments from readers who are looking for exact location where I bought this hookah (shisha). I usually don’t reply them because I can’t recall the place. Too long ago =_=

In this post I explained how I got lost during the journey of purchasing this hookah. Damn, I miss those university life. Two stupid people want to smoke shisha so desperately.

#3) A post which had a great discussion

Personal Blog Is A Waste Of Time – In this post, I’ve listed five reasons why bloggers who blog about personal life is a waste of time and I accidentally (or rather, successfully) caused a debate between two polars.

I wrote this posts to convince myself to stop blogging at Ahbing.com, then I realised there are loyal readers who enjoyed my writings.

I even received a few personal emails to discuss this topic in private, some agree with me, some literally spit on me. But the discussion is heading in a positive direction.

Ironically, that posts convinced myself to continue blogging at Ahbing.com :)

#4) Your most helpful post

Top 15 Best Food at Kota Kinabalu (Ultimate Guide to KK Food™)

I’ve spend much effort to compile the resources for this posts, and this post attract a lot of attention. And from this post alone, I received many appreciation emails, a chance to host a show, and newspaper appearance.

Besides that, I’ve established myself as KK Food blogger. ekkk! accident bah tuhh. I was doing this for fun only ^^;

And also from this post, I know what my potential reader wants. As long as I am providing value and good resouces, more readers will come back. I foresee a few monetization methods too.

I am compiling more similar posts now. These posts very expensive man… have to use own money ^^;

#5) A post with a title that you are proud of

Ahbing Teaches You How to Cook Series

I had most fun when I am compiling these blog entries. Not surprisingly, these are my favourite titles too.

While I was studying at Australia, I was the Iron Chef. House mates buy whatever ingredient they want to eat, and I’ll cook.

I also use this opportunity to share my cooking experience with you.

Cook + take photo + blog + share knowledge = isn’t that awesome?

#6)A post that you wish more people had read

This is a post I wishes more people will read (or absorb the value from it).

Seek Danger

This post is what reminds myself of what I am currently doing. I am taking unconventional route, and I am going to take higher risks compare to others.

And do you know, short and simple posts are more difficult to write compare to long and gibberish posts?

I am hoping you can absorb the essence of the blog entry and apply in situation where you think is appropriate.

P/S: If you wish to read more older posts, I encourage you to visit the tabbed links on sidebar.

This is one experimental post I am testing at local blogs.

The idea is to publish a post that is a list of 6 links to posts that you have written that respond to the following 6 categories.

Your links should be the following:

  • Your first post
  • A post you enjoyed writing the most
  • A post which had a great discussion
  • Your most helpful post
  • A post with a title you are proud of
  • A post that you wished more people had read

This is to encourage you to dig back into your old archive and share the older contents to your readers.

You might like to add a few explanations to different links – for example to talk a little about why you enjoyed writing a post.

If you tag your posts or are going to tweet a link to it – use #6links as a tag to help the meme continue.

This post was inspired by Problogger.net, who did the same few weeks ago.

I need your suggestion.

I am relaunching my site, Manyholes.com and I paid $$ for designers to create logo for me. I received more than 100+ entries, I shortlisted 3 of them (took me long long time), and now I have to decide ONE winner. I had fun picking on lousy designers, it’s like a bad boss with bad attitude. Hehehe.

The process was fun. A bit sad that the competition was over. Now is the time to pick that ONE SINGLE winner, and honestly I am having hard time -__- it is like a single guy who can’t decide which girl to chase because all has their merits.

Here are the 3 designs I shortlisted.

Entry (A)

Entry (B)

Entry (C)

The logos are judged based on following criteria:

  1. First-impression
  2. Attractive
  3. Easy to read
  4. Long lasting (won’t bored easily)
  5. Most importantly, you like it!

Personally, I like Entry A the most. But Entry B and Entry C seems to give longer lasting impression, and can use the logo for many years to come. Not surprisingly, Entry (B) and Entry (C) are created by same designer.

To put in an analogy, Entry (A) is the hot chick in club. You want her tonight and you want her badly. While Entry (B) and Entry (C) are the wife material. You can look at her for many years also not sian wan.

I need to make decision by Wednesday (2 June 2010).

I need your suggestions.

Please drop your comment.. short answer will do. Even more awesome if you can explain your reason :)

Dear readers,

Can you spare 30 seconds to fill up my poll on the side bar?

I’d really love to see feedback and opinion from you. Getting to blog what you want to read is what motivates me to continue blogging.

Using polls is probably the best method to get input from my readers, especially the majority of lurkers :P I appreciate each and every input.

Get your ass to fill in that poll now ;)

If you have any additional interest or points which is not in the poll, I welcome you to leave comment.

If you are my long term reader, you might notice a pattern here – I blog ON and OFF. I am not a consistent blogger, and let me tell you why.

1) Blogging about personal life does not benefit readers

I have loyal readers. I easily identify them because they are the people who stab me in the ass if I don’t update my blog. “Hoi! update blog leh! my main source of entertainment woh”.

The truth fact is, I am only providing a pure source of entertainment to the readers. And by entertaining my readers, I have to sacrifice my own effort and time, which brings up the next point.

2) Requires significant effort and time

Updating entry takes serious effort and time.

I’ve been blogging since the day I came to Australia for oversea study. I’d say probably four years of blogging experience (took blogging more seriously the last two years). Since I’ve graduated, and planned to move back Malaysia. My blog topic would not be as exciting as during my stay here in Australia.

On top of that, blogging became a habit during university life. It gives me temporary “escape” from daunting university tasks.

In hindsight, I am not benefiting myself in terms of income or reputation. That amount of reputation and income do not justify the effort and time I invested.

3) Limited space for improvement

Sufficient to say, blogging had benefited me. I’ve learn a lot from blogging. English became my mother tongue, and I am half ang mo already. The only thing is, I am not able to speak fluently. I blame myself for not practicing enough during my stay at Australia because all friends from Malaysia :P

The biggest benefit I gain from blogging – able to write proficiently in English. Albeit I am not a world class writer, I am able to express what I meant. I am grateful to acquire this skill, which enables me to explore my to way around the internet freely.

And around internet, I found exciting events where I see opportunities to expand my growth and put my knowledge to test. Mainly the internet lifestyle, what I always wanted.

One of my best female friend, Cassie, knows I am choosing this path, says, “It’s so you, suits you 100%”

4) Communication with readers

The past four blogging years, I am grateful to meet some awesome blogging friends. I definitely won’t have the chance meet up with them without blogging medium.

I still remember four years ago, my main purpose of setting up a blog is to keep my girlfriend updated (friends and family starts reading my blog). Subsequently, Friendster appeared, followed by Facebook. Needless to say, I do not need a blog to update my friends and family anymore.

Besides that, I have many lurker readers. Lurkers are people who read blog and rarely leave comments. When you meet up with the readers, they remember every posts I have written. In most cases I forgot what I wrote, hahahaha. I am flattered. Seriously. This brings to next point..

5) A good blogger connects with the readers

A good blog involves a lot of interaction between author and readers, but only if the author is able to write well and convert readers to take proactive action, example, “please leave comment and tell me what you think”. If readers swamp your comments, that is a good chances you are a excellent blogger.

My point is, I am not able… to… pull… out.. this.. ^^; I tried asking questions in past few posts. And result is?

I only get 1% of reaction from my readers. 100 readers visited, 1 reader leave comment. Seeing a low reaction from readers, I wonder, do I really connect with my readers?

Conclusion

I might stop updating ahbing.com. Its not a statement yet, but I won’t deny the possibility of shutting down this blog in near future.

The worst case scenario would be updates with less effort – no photo edit, no proof read, and only photo with captions.

My main efforts will divide into projects and websites that bring solutions to readers, and possibly revenue for myself.

Three more months until 2010, I want to achieve something significant in 2009. Maybe my first million? HEHEHEHEHE.

Question: If you own a personal blog – what has the blog benefited you?

If you do no own a blog, how does a personal blog benefits the author?
